Oeverfilters zijn kleinere filters bedoeld voor vijvers met een klein visbestand. In verhouding moeten er veel planten en weinig vissen aanwezig zijn. Het oeverfilter is voorzien van diverse filtermedia waar het water doorheen stroomt. Zo vindt er in één ruimte mechanische en biologische filtering plaats. Vanwege het relatief kleine volume van deze filtermedia, is de bacteriële filterwerking tamelijk beperkt.
Wanneer de oeverfilter te klein is kan gekozen worden voor een drukfilter. Een drukfilter heeft een grotere filtercapaciteit in vergelijking met de oeverfilters. Een drukfilter kan dus ingezet worden bij een vijver met wat meer vissen. Echter heeft ook dit filter een beperkte biologische filterwerking. Drukfilters zijn dan ook geschikt voor vijvers met een klein tot middelmatig visbestand en veel planten. Het drukfilter is ideaal om tussen de pomp en een waterval te plaatsen. Zo stuwt u het water richting de waterval, wordt het onderweg gefilterd, en kan daarna via een losse waterval uitstromen. Met de druk van het drukfilter kan namelijk enig hoogteverschil worden overbrugd.
Tot slot het meerkamerfilter. Een relatief eenvoudig maar effectief filtersysteem dat zeer veel wordt toegepast. Deze filters nemen wat meer ruimte in dan de standaard oever- en drukfilters, maar hebben dan ook een grote filtercapaciteit. Het water wordt in het filter gepompt waarna het door meerdere compartimenten stroomt. Ieder compartiment is gevuld met een bepaald type filtermateriaal. In de meeste gevallen zal het bestaand uit filtermatten die steeds fijner van structuur worden. Daarna stroomt het vijverwater door naar de biologische filterkamer waarin een biologische filtermedium is aangebracht. Dit grote oppervlak zorgt voor een gezonde bacteriecultuur dat de biologische filtering bevorderd. Kenmerkend voor dit filter is dat het vijverwater van onderen naar boven door de verschillende compartimenten wordt gestuwd.
